More Women Are Buying Their Own Diamonds Than Ever Before

There was a time when buying fine jewelry almost always meant waiting.

Waiting for a birthday.

Waiting for an anniversary.

Waiting for an engagement.

Or waiting for someone else to decide you deserved it.

Thankfully, those days are fading.

One of the biggest shifts I've seen as a jewelry designer isn't a new trend or a different diamond shape—it's who's buying the jewelry. More women than ever are purchasing diamonds for themselves, and that shift has completely changed the conversation around fine jewelry.

Fine Jewelry Has Always Told a Story

People sometimes assume self-purchasing means buying jewelry on impulse.

In reality, it's usually the opposite.

Fine jewelry is an investment. Most people aren't waking up on a Tuesday and deciding to spend thousands of dollars without thinking it through.

Instead, they're waiting for the right piece.

The one that feels like them.

The piece that says something about their style, their personality, or the life they've built.

It doesn't need to celebrate a holiday to have meaning. Sometimes the meaning is simply, I found something I love, and I wanted it.

That's reason enough.

Lab Diamonds Changed Everything

If I had to point to one thing that accelerated this shift, it would be lab-grown diamonds.

For years, larger diamond jewelry felt reserved for engagements or major life milestones. Big diamond studs, tennis bracelets, and tennis necklaces often carried the unspoken assumption that someone else had bought them for you.

Lab diamonds changed that conversation.

Today, I'm selling dramatically more diamond studs, tennis bracelets, and tennis necklaces to women buying for themselves than ever before.

Not because the pieces matter less.

Because they're finally accessible on their own terms.

Women aren't waiting for permission.

They're buying the jewelry they've always wanted.

Jewelry Doesn't Need an Occasion

One thing that's always been true about my business is that most of my clients are buying for themselves. Around the holidays, I'll naturally see more gift purchases, but for the rest of the year, it's women choosing pieces because they genuinely want them.

And I think that's exactly how it should be.

Your jewelry collection should grow alongside your life—not someone else's timeline.

Maybe it's a promotion.

Maybe it's finishing a huge project.

Maybe it's your birthday.

Or maybe it's absolutely nothing at all.

Sometimes the occasion is simply deciding that today feels like a good day to finally own the piece you've been thinking about for months.

Confidence Looks Different in Fine Jewelry

People often ask me why someone should buy themselves diamonds.

My answer is simple.

Because you want diamonds.

That's enough.

There's also an interesting psychological side to it. Research has shown that when people wear clothing or accessories that make them feel more like themselves, it can boost confidence, improve mood, and even influence how they carry themselves.

So yes...

You could say it's science.

But I think anyone who's ever put on their favorite jewelry before walking into an important meeting or a first date already knew that.

A Story I'll Never Forget

One of my clients told me about a first date she went on at Zuma in New York.

She was wearing several of her favorite pieces—14k gold and natural diamond jewelry that she'd purchased herself over the years.

As they talked, her date noticed how brightly her jewelry caught the light and asked about it. When she explained that everything was real gold and natural diamonds, he looked surprised.

His next question was, "Were you married before?"

She smiled and said, "No. I bought it myself."

She told me there was a brief pause.

Not because he was judging her.

Because he hadn't expected that answer.

In that moment, the conversation shifted. The jewelry wasn't impressive because of its price tag—it was impressive because it represented something. She had built a life where she could choose these pieces for herself, on her own terms.

When she told me the story later, what stood out wasn't his reaction.

It was hers.

She said wearing jewelry she'd bought for herself made her feel more confident walking into that room. Not because she needed diamonds to validate her, but because every piece reflected a choice she'd made for herself.

There's something powerful about that.

Buy the Diamonds

The best part about today's jewelry world is that the old rules don't really apply anymore.

You don't have to wait for a proposal.

You don't have to wait for an anniversary.

You don't have to wait for someone else to decide it's the right time.

If you've found a piece that feels like you, that's your moment.

Buy the diamonds.

Wear them every day.

Let them become part of your story—because the best stories are the ones you write yourself.
